Our nursing team is a blend of recent RN and LVN graduates and seasoned nurses, who have extensive years of experience. We boast longevity. We support the pediatric clinical experience for local RN and LVN educational programs. We support 5 Bay area Community Colleges in their clinical nursing experiences.
The acuity is high. The care of our children is similar to a TCU or PICU with stable, but medically fragile cases. The Respiratory Therapists are a vital component to the team, and in many ways, direct the clinical path, since 95-100% of our children have tracheotomies and approximately half of are ventilator supported.
Pediatric nursing care at SASH is likened to acute care nursing. Care specifics our children receive include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Enteral medications and feedings via gastrostomy or Jejunostomy tubes
- Seizure, tone, or hypothalamic deregulation management
- Intrathecal Baclofen Pump management
- Enteral weaning to oral feedings
- Intravenous or central line therapy
- Antibiotic therapy
- Wound care
- Optimal skin care
- Orthopedic and orthotic management
Licensed Nurses, both RN and LVN, deliver direct patient care of the children.
Each nurse brings their unique loving and caring abilities to each of the children. These
are well-oriented and trained nurses, who constantly go the “extra mile” to ensure all
the children are safe, and most importantly, feel loved. Our nurses can tell all the subtle nuisances that constitute a change of condition in the children and make sure the kids get the
appropriate care and that their needs are met as soon as possible.
The CNA's bring a wonderfully loving and unique way of caring for all the kids. They are very aware and vigilant of the special needs of each child and are able to recognize changes immediately and notify the licensed nurse. They always go way above and beyond their roles by caring for each child, making sure that each one has what they need to be cared for in a clean,
safe and loving manner.
The most unique thing at Sub-Acute Saratoga Children’s Hospital is that we are family who cares for the children in a loving and professional manner. We are the people that touch and care for our kids on a regular basis. We establish a professional and personal relationship with the patient families, constantly providing them with changes in medical needs. Collectively with our other departments, we are “The Acute Alternative for Kids”.
